Poço Azul

Vilar da Veiga

A Wild Mountain Gem

Poço Azul is one of the most magical and hidden spots in the Peneda-Gerês National Park. Tucked deep in the mountains above Ermida and accessible only on foot, this natural pool dazzles with its incredible turquoise-blue water, surrounded by smooth granite walls and untouched forest. Getting there requires effort — around 10 km (round trip) from Cascata do Arado, along an unmarked mountain trail that crosses wild valleys and streams — but the reward is unforgettable. On calm days, the clear water reflects the sky like glass, inviting a refreshing swim in complete silence. It’s an adventure for experienced hikers, best enjoyed early in the day and with proper preparation.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Campo do Gerês, follow the scenic road towards Vila do Gerês (about 8 km). As you leave the village, take the mountain road that climbs towards Pedra Bela, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the park. Stop here to enjoy the breathtaking panorama over the Caniçada reservoir, the Gerês valley and the surrounding granite peaks. From Pedra Bela, continue along the same road following the signs for Cascata do Arado. The last stretch is a narrow gravel track, passable by most cars if driven carefully. Alternatively, you can park near the viewpoint Miradouro das Rocas and walk the final 2–3 km.

The trail to Poço Azul starts near Cascata do Arado, so the best way to begin is to first drive or hike to the waterfall. The hike is roughly 10 km in total (there and back), with some steep and rocky sections, so good footwear and plenty of water are essential. The route is not officially marked, but you can find a GPS track in the Helpful Links section. The landscape is wild and open, with granite peaks, small streams, and breathtaking views over the Gerês mountains. At the end, you’ll find the stunning blue pool hidden between cliffs — a true reward for those who venture off the beaten path.
