Cascata do Arado

The Iconic Arado Waterfall
Cascata do Arado is one of the most famous waterfalls in Peneda-Gerês National Park, located near the village of Ermida. Formed by the Arado River, it plunges dramatically through a narrow granite gorge, creating a series of crystal-clear pools perfect for a refreshing dip. The waterfall is easily accessible by car and a short walk from the parking area, offering a great reward for little effort. For those who enjoy hiking, Cascata do Arado can also serve as the starting point for longer adventures — such as the beautiful trail to Vale do Teixeira or Poço Azul, both of which reveal the wilder, quieter side of Gerês.
From Campo do Gerês, follow the scenic road towards Vila do Gerês (about 8 km). As you leave the village, take the mountain road that climbs towards Pedra Bela, one of the most iconic viewpoints in the park. Stop here to enjoy the breathtaking panorama over the Caniçada reservoir, the Gerês valley and the surrounding granite peaks. From Pedra Bela, continue along the same road following the signs for Cascata do Arado. The last stretch is a narrow gravel track, passable by most cars if driven carefully. Alternatively, you can park near the viewpoint Miradouro das Rocas and walk the final 2–3 km.
