The Peneda-Gerês National Park is filled with rivers, waterfalls, and natural pools that reveal the wild beauty of the mountains. Around Casa Sulfato, you’ll find crystal-clear lagoons shaded by oak trees and waterfalls hidden among granite cliffs — perfect for swimming, picnicking, or simply enjoying the serenity of nature.

Below are some of our favorite spots to discover and cool off on warm days.

Cascata São Miguel

At the Spanish border, the São Miguel Waterfall cascades through smooth granite into a clear pool below a Roman bridge. Easy to reach and perfect for a refreshing swim, it’s one of Gerês’s most scenic and historic spots.

Cascata Mata Albergaria

Lagoas da Mata da Albergaria

Starting at Portela do Homem, this easy 4 km trail passes waterfalls, lagoons, and Roman milestones beneath the oaks of the Mata da Albergaria. Short and scenic, it’s perfect for families and anyone discovering the beauty of hiking in Gerês.

Cascata do Arado

Near the village of Ermida, the Cascata do Arado plunges through a narrow granite gorge into crystal-clear pools. Easy to reach by car and a short walk, it’s one of Gerês’s most famous waterfalls and a gateway to wilder mountain trails.

Poço Azul

Hidden deep in the mountains above Ermida, the Poço Azul dazzles with turquoise-blue water and wild beauty. Reachable only on foot, this 10 km hike rewards experienced hikers with one of Gerês’s most magical and untouched natural pools.

Poço Verde

Poço Verde

Near the mountain village of Fafião, the Poço Verde glows with deep emerald water carved into granite cliffs. Stop at the Miradouro de Fafião for stunning views, then explore the village, its wolf trap, and the peaceful riverside trail below.

Sete Lagoas

Sete Lagoas

High in the Gerês mountains, the Sete Lagoas form seven stunning blue-green lagoons linked by small cascades. Surrounded by granite peaks and open valleys, they reward hikers with one of the park’s most breathtaking and remote natural landscapes.
