Poço Verde

Poço Verde is a beautiful natural pool near the mountain village of Fafião, one of the most traditional and welcoming communities in Peneda-Gerês. The river carves its way through a granite gorge, forming a deep, emerald-green pool that gives the place its name. Before descending to the water, make sure to stop at the Miradouro de Fafião, located just above the village — from here you can enjoy a spectacular view over the valley, the river, and the rugged peaks that define this part of the park. From the viewpoint, it’s  pleasant walk down to the trail that leads to Poço Verde. The area invites slow exploration: take time to wander through Fafião’s stone streets, visit the old Fojo do Lobo (traditional wolf trap), and relax by the river. It’s a perfect mix of Gerês’ wild beauty and living mountain culture.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Campo do Gerês, drive towards Vilar da Veiga and continue along the scenic mountain road towards Ermida. This small granite village is well worth a stop — it’s home to the Cascatas da Rajada, a beautiful series of waterfalls tucked just outside the village, perfect for a short walk and a refreshing pause. After exploring Ermida, continue the journey towards Fafião (about 25 km in total, roughly 40 minutes by car). As you approach the village, make sure to stop at the Miradouro de Fafião, which offers a breathtaking view over the valley and the river that forms the Poço Verde below. From the viewpoint, descend and follow the short path down to the pool. The walk is quick and easy, but the rocks near the water can be slippery — sturdy shoes are recommended.
