Mata da Albergaria

The Mata da Albergaria is one of the most beautiful and ancient forests in Portugal, located in the heart of the Peneda-Gerês National Park. This protected area preserves a remnant of the original oak forest that once covered much of the region. Walking or driving through it, you’ll be surrounded by centuries-old oaks, crystal-clear streams, and the peaceful sound of nature.

The forest is also crossed by the Geira Romana, the old Roman road that once connected Braga to Astorga, in Spain. Along the way, you can still see original milestones (miliários) and traces of this ancient route, a remarkable reminder of the area’s long history.

The Mata da Albergaria is especially beautiful in autumn, when the leaves turn golden and the light filters gently through the trees — a perfect spot for a quiet walk, a scenic drive, or a moment to simply enjoy the wild essence of Gerês.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Casa Sulfato, drive towards Portela do Homem. Shortly after passing the park control gate (Porta de Campo do Gerês), you’ll enter the Mata da Albergaria

Please note that driving through the Mata da Albergaria is subject to a small entrance fee during the summer months, and parking inside the protected area is not allowed. The best option is to park at the border area in Portela do Homem and continue on foot by following the Lagoas da Mata da Albergaria trail. This short and easy hike takes you along crystal-clear lagoons and waterfalls, surrounded by centuries-old oak trees — one of the most peaceful and enchanting places in Gerês.

For a truly immersive experience, leave the car at home and explore the area on foot or by bike directly from Casa Sulfato. The round trip through Mata da Albergaria and the Lagoas covers about 20 km, offering a peaceful journey through forest, streams, and mountain scenery — a perfect way to feel the rhythm and silence of Gerês.
