Lagoas da Mata da Albergaria

The Lagoas da Mata da Albergaria and Cascata São Miguel trail is one of our favorite short routes in the Gerês mountains. The trail starts and ends at Portela do Homem, right next to the Spanish border. Over just 4 kilometers, it reveals some of the greatest treasures of the Mata da Albergaria, one of Portugal’s most enchanting forests. Its short distance makes it perfect for families or for those taking their first steps into the world of hiking.

HOW TO GET THERE

From Casa Sulfato, you can reach the Lagoas da Mata da Albergaria either by car or on foot. By car, follow the road toward Portela do Homem (about 15 minutes) and park at the official parking area by the border.

If you prefer to hike, you can follow the  forest road through Mata da Albergaria and the Geira Romana trail directly from Campo do Gerês – an approximately 18 km walk each way through beautiful forest and mountain scenery, passing ancient Roman milestones along the way.

A visit to the Lagoas da Mata da Albergaria includes a visit to Cascata Sao Miguel. The trail follows the river, passing a series of peaceful lagoons and small cascades that are perfect for a swim or a picnic along the way.
