Cascata São Miguel
Portala de Homem
Cascata São Miguel (Portela de Homem)
Right by the Spanish border, this impressive waterfall marks one of the most scenic spots in Gerês. The water of the Homem River drops through smooth granite rocks into a clear pool just below the old Roman bridge at Portela do Homem. It’s easy to reach from the main road, and on warm days the natural pool is perfect for a quick, refreshing swim. The surrounding mountain scenery and the nearby Roman milestones of the ancient Geira Romana make this a truly special stop in the park.
From Casa Sulfato, you can reach the Cascata de São Miguel either by car or on foot. By car, follow the road toward Portela do Homem (about 15 minutes) and park at the official parking area by the border. From there, it’s a short walk down to the bridge and the waterfall.
If you prefer to hike, you can follow the forest road through Mata da Albergaria and the Geira Romana trail directly from Campo do Gerês – an approximately 7 km walk each way through beautiful forest and mountain scenery, passing ancient Roman milestones along the way.
A visit to the Cascata de São Miguel can easily be combined with the Lagoas da Mata da Albergaria trail. From the border area, the path continues through one of the most beautiful parts of Gerês — a shaded oak forest crossed by the ancient Geira Romana. The trail follows the river, passing a series of peaceful lagoons and small cascades that are perfect for a swim or a picnic along the way.
